Encaustic Example About Me Artist Statement A Little More ...
I am a self-taught artist living in Northern California. The San Francisco Bay Area and surrounds offer urban and natural inspiration. The plants in my garden give me innumerable opportunities to watch shapes and colors morph while I keep my hands busy weeding and rearranging.

The work here is primarily on birch cradle board or Masonite. The Masonite pieces are generally available framed. Please contact me if you would like additional pictures of any piece.
My work is a meditation on the natural world. I hope to share with you my sense of joy and respect. I create to touch the world with more care, to see who I might be, and to remind myself that I am alive.

The Cubists opened my mind to the concepts of perception and abstraction at a young age and remain a primary influence. I am particularly fond of Juan Gris for his frequent choice of strong colors and cheerful subjects. The Abstract Expressionists, especially Joan Mitchell, and traditional Chinese ink painters increased my sensitivity and ambition to convey mood with stroke, as does the figurative work of David Parks and Purvis Young. The WWI work of the British painter John Nash reminds me of the potential for honesty and beauty in difficult times.

Seven years ago, I stumbled onto the encaustic medium and fell in love. The material allows light to reflect back through it, like watercolor, and allows dramatic changes as the work develops, unlike watercolor. You can work fast, embed objects, layer, and sculpt. These characteristics both free and challenge me.
